课程: Ubuntu Linux: Operating System Basics

Environment setup

- [Instructor] In this course I'll be using an Ubuntu desktop system that's already installed and running. I'm using Ubuntu with a known desktop, running in VirtualBox but you could use any version of Ubuntu you want. Other courses in the library and the previous course in this series cover the various ways you can install Ubuntu so we won't spend time doing that here. If you want to follow along and you don't have a machine set up, take some time to do that now. Because we'll be making changes to how the system works, be sure you're not using a production system, or a system that anyone else relies on to get their work done. That's why I recommend you use a virtual machine. But if for some reason you can't use a virtual machine on your computer, consider setting up an account with a cloud provider, like DigitalOcean, Azure, AWS, or many others that are out there. The important point is that you want an environment where you can change things and learn without disrupting others. I do expect that you're somewhat familiar with Linux and especially the command line. If not, take a look at the previous course in this series on the essential commands. This course will introduce you to some procedures and skills that merit practice, so be sure to take some time to explore on your own as well.
