Logging into a text console and the GUI

- [Instructor] When your system starts up, and really, all the time you're using your system directly, you have a choice of two different modes: the graphical mode, if you have a desktop environment installed, and a text mode. What we're seeing when we look at the GUI is called a screen, and in the text mode it's called a console. A console is a little bit different from a terminal, in that a console is considered to be directly attached to a machine, like what you'd see when you're looking at the machine's physical display. But a terminal can come in from a remote connection, or it can be started up inside the console. But whichever mode you're using, it's still really a console. Some other operating systems call their log viewer a console which can be confusing. Here on Linux, you'll have six consoles available by default.
