Installing Linux over the network

- [Instructor] We can install Linux over a network in a couple of different ways. The installer can be slimmed down, and put on very small media, just a very basic bootable environment, which then goes and gets installation files from a server on the network or on the Internet. Or, we can set up a server that hosts the installation files and provides a network-bootable environment, using a technology called PXE, or Preboot Execution Environment, without having to have any local installation media at all. A network installer image is available for most common distros, and they usually come with a list of mirrors where installation images are hosted baked right in. The install image is pretty small compared to the standard live-CD installer, and it starts up in a lower graphics mode, and even offers a command-line installation mode, which is great for installing on older hardware that may not be suitable for desktop environments.
