As a graphic designer, you need to be able to design with type in common scenarios like novels, manuals, brochures, posters, and book and magazine covers. While the design principles are essentially the same, each scenario is unique. There are certain formats and conventions that need to be adhered to (or at least acknowledged) and certain techniques and approaches that will yield the best results for you. In this course, experienced graphic designer and author Nigel French uses practical examples to show you how to approach each type of job. He identifies the distinguishing features, and discusses the challenges each job poses. Nigel also highlights professional examples of how others have approached these jobs and challenges.

    A lot of this course teaches you the specifics of working with InDesign/Illustrator/Photoshop. Each video has a brief section at the start which tells you important ideas (for example, for event flyers, he says that your font should reflect the tone of the event). After that, he works through a design, but rather than teaching you how to make design decisions, he focuses on specific tools and settings within whatever program he's using. If you're trying to learn Adobe programs, this will be very useful, but if you want to learn typography concepts to use in your designs, you won't get much.
