Managing both up and down
- You might be thinking that if you are new to the team and have no direct reports that you don't have to worry about management. Well, it's just not the case. There will be resources that you need to work with that won't report to you directly, but that you will have to judge if what they've given you is well suited to the project. For instance, a subject matter expert may be lateral to you in another department, or even more likely, will be senior to you, perhaps even a department head. So they certainly don't report to you but you will have to negotiate with them to determine how much time to spend with you. And if you give them some material to review, but the responses to your query are not clear, you might have to visit them again with follow-up questions. This is a real balancing act. If you don't get the information that you need, you would eventually have no choice but to discuss the issue with your boss and get advice, but you have to be extremely diplomatic when doing so…
