Importance of identifying trends
- [Narrator] Product development takes time, sometimes years. Famously, it took James Dyson 15 years to develop the cyclonic vacuum. Even industries with tight product cycles like apparel, have to design their products long before they get into the hands of their users. Design teams are therefore always anticipating, predicting, designing for some future state, unfortunately, without the benefit of a crystal ball. So what to do? In this video, we will look at trend identification as a strategy to guide product development. With enough resources, we can model and simulate a system we want to understand and use that to make our predictions. This happens all the time in finance with quantitative investment strategies, or in hurricane tracking, or climate change, or epidemiology, anywhere a system is well defined and the stakes are high enough to warrant investing the time and money to build a model.
