- [Instructor] Within the TRIZ theory of inventive problem-solving, innovation is problem-solving in response to functional conflict. The idea is that there are functions that we want, but in the process of writing those functions, we add additional functions, which are harmful or have unwanted effects. This creates the conflict. Let's look at some examples of what this means. Imagine you have an ice cream cone. You need to keep the ice cream cone from melting, so you build an insulated box around it. But now the insulin box prevents you from eating your ice cream cone. This is a silly example, but it captures the essence of functional conflict.
