- The first time I dribbled a basketball was a disaster. You see, I grew up in Haiti where football, or soccer as Americans called it, was a popular sport. I didn't touch a basketball until I was about 13, and I was not very good when I started. The fact is very few of us are any good at something when we first try it. That's why training a consistent and diverse hiring team is essential to effectively implementing a skills-first hiring strategy. If you work in a large company, it's likely that you've had some training in unconscious bias. Simply put, we all have many unconscious biases, and these biases are persistently hard to change.
