- [Instructor] In this chapter, we are going to cover some of the introduction of Linux operating system. We will cover introduction to Linux, Linux benefits, all the distributions of Linux operating system, some of the Red Hat products, and some important things that you should remember in Linux operating system. So let's dive right into the introduction to Linux. Whenever we start learning something new, it is important that we learn some of the basics and history of it. Let's start with what is Linux. Linux is an open source operating system just like Microsoft has Windows and Apple has Mac OS. Linux is based on Unix operating system. It was created by Linus Trovalds in 1991. And since then, it has become one of the most widely used operating system, particularly in the world of server, supercomputers, and embedded system. Now, let me explain to you Linux in a very simple way. Let's say you have a computer at home, whether it's a PC or a laptop. Now, it's just a simple piece of brick if you do not have an operating system running on it. So what do you do? Well, first, back in the days, you have a CD or DVD. You insert that CD into your CD-ROM. Well, nowadays, you could attach that ISO image to your computer. Once you insert that, then it will start the installation wizard. The installation wizard is going to ask you a few options to pick, and then at the end of the installation, then you will see the message, "Welcome to the operating system that you're installing." And in our case, it will be Linux operating system. Now, you have a operating system on your computer. You could attach an external keyboard, or you could attach a mouse, and then execute commands over your operating system. Now, those commands can be carried out to your printer to print anything that you want, or if you wanted to connect to the internet, or if you wanted to install any application that runs on your Linux operating system. That's how I could put together in a very simple way what is a Linux and how the operating system works. In the next video, we'll go over some of the major benefits Linux has to offer.
