New packages are released on a regular basis, often more frequently than the operating system distributions. For updates on Raspbian, we use the Advanced Packaging Tool, most often known as APT. Let's spend five minutes and learn more about his important tool. Hi, Mark Niemann-Ross and welcome to this week's edition of Raspberry Pi Weekly. Every week we explore the Raspberry Pi and share useful tips. The easiest way to learn about this tool is just to dive right in. Pull up a terminal window and enter apt-get update. You will probably get an error, permission denied. This is because apt-get should be run as a super-user. Instead of typing in apt-get, you should type in sudo apt-get update. Now beware this can take awhile, sometimes half an hour, and the progress indicator may not necessarily be correct. Always start the update process with apt-get update.
