- [Instructor] After the Raspberry Pi installer finishes, you'll be looking at the Raspberry Pi OS. The Raspberry Pi OS is the default operating system for the Raspberry Pi. I highly recommend it as your first operating system. It was formerly known as Raspbian, and you may have heard it referred to as Jessie or Stretch or Buster. These are just versions of the Raspberry Pi OS, and for our purposes, essentially the same thing. The Raspberry Pi OS is based on Debian Linux, and it includes all of the standard Linux utilities and commands. You can confirm which version you are running by opening a terminal window and typing lsb_release, followed by a space, and then -a. When you hit Return, you can see that I'm running the Buster version of Raspbian. You'll immediately note the Raspberry Pi OS offers a familiar desktop.
