Dealing with a task you dread

- I hate this task. You've probably thought this at some point in your career. If you procrastinate to avoid a dreaded task, three strategies will help. First, monitor your negative self talk. Grading papers can be such a boring part of teaching, but I exasperate my dread if I think or say, oh, blah, poor me, I have to grade a hundred papers, this is going to be so awful. Instead I just focus on the task itself without all the emotion or drama. I'm grading this week. It's just a neutral task to be done. Now if that doesn't work, you can focus on the value of doing the work. To start, focus on why. My students won't learn without feedback, so grading matters. How does your dreaded task impact you and others? Tell others of your commitment to complete the task. Being accountable to someone, or at least avoiding embarrassment of having to confess that you're still procrastinating ups the value of completion. Reward yourself for doing a dreaded task.
