- Have you ever felt like a deer in the headlights? You see this monstrous task, barreling down the road at you, and you're just paralyzed into complete inaction. Here are the strategies that worked for me and will help you when you're overwhelmed. Write a list titled How I Will Know When I'm Done. A clear endpoint is motivating. Then, figure out how to get to the endpoint. Break your monstrous task down into bite sized manageable pieces. I wrote out a list of 50 small concrete tasks that I needed to do. I prioritized the list from one to 50, and I estimated how long each task would take. While that list was daunting, I at least knew where to begin. I found it helpful to use concrete, actionable verbs to describe each task. For example, I had research topic on my to do list, but I realized research isn't a clear action for me, and I didn't know how long it would take.
