- Have you ever received an email from a brand and thought, wait, that's not for me. The practice of segmentation is designed to do away with that thought and make emails more personal and relevant to their recipients. Segmentation is dividing up your list and sending emails to each segment based on common factors. Like gender, demographics, or geographic location. Here's an example, so I'm a middle-aged man living in a Northern climate. A clothing retailer would send me promotions for men based on the season. Like heavy jackets or boots during winter months. But, a younger woman living in a warm climate would receive emails from the same clothing retailer and those emails would have young women wearing clothes for that climate.
