Communication secrets from media training

- Here are the secrets I learned in media training that are actually super helpful and applicable in all kinds of conversations. Number one, never repeat a negative premise or question. If somebody says to you, "Is it true you have doubts about the new leadership?" Don't repeat the negative framing, because you can actually be quoted as saying something you don't mean. Instead say, "Here's how I actually view leadership." And add more detail. Or say, "I don't agree with that stance. Here's what I think." Number two, if there's a topic you speak on often, have command of two to three recent statistics that support your perspective. You don't need to be a walking encyclopedia, but a few stats are very compelling. Make sure that they're no more than two or three years old and that you can cite their sources. Three, don't speak for others. If somebody says to you, "You must be shocked by your competitors collapse." Don't take debate. Instead say, "I'll let X person comment on their own behalf. But what we're focused on right now is Y." Last, know your North Star. The key in media training is, don't answer the question you're asked. Answer the question you wish you were asked. If there's a crucial message you want to get across, that's your North Star. Practice answering questions that lead you back there. Then, if they keep commenting on something trivial or that you don't know well, you can bring the conversation skillfully back to what matters. Try these out and let me know what you think.
