Target messages with @mentions

- [Instructor] When you post a message, you can use @ mentions, which can specifically refer to a member of your team, and targets that message at them to draw their attention. I'm working in my web design team, in the channel called Site Redesign, and I'm going to reply to an existing conversation thread. I'll start typing in my message. Then I want to refer to a specific person, so I'll use an @ mention. To do that, you can start by typing the @ symbol and do not type a space. Immediately after the @ symbol, start typing in that person's name and it will search through the members of this team. I found the person I was looking for, so I can click on him, and this is what an @ mention looks like, I can see that person's name in a different color, and you can actually feel free to delete the last name and just keep the first name, so you can keep things a little more informal, and then finish typing the rest of your message. And then I can hit the return key or click the send button to send that message. So with that message posted, I can see Wei's name and it is in a different color, so people will know that the message is targeted specifically at him. Next, let's see what it looks like when you receive an @ mention. So one of my coworkers will post a message that @ mentions me, and I see a notification popping up on the screen letting me know that that message has been posted and I have been @ mentioned. And since that at mention was made in a different channel from the one I'm looking at, I see a little number one on that channel. I can also see a number one on the teams button in the sidebar on the left and on the activity button. I'll go to the activity section where you can see recent notifications and I can see the message that was posted and the response, which contains an @ mention targeted at me, or I could just go to that team. So I'll go back to the team section by clicking teams in the sidebar on the left, I'll go to the team and the channel where that message was posted, and here's that response. I can see my name in a different color and I can see the @ symbol next to it. I am Nick, so I can see this message was targeted at me. This will draw your attention to messages that have been directed at you, where you've been mentioned. Now finally, I also want you to see that you can direct an @ mention at a team. So I'll go back to my web design team, back to this site redesign channel, I'll start a new post, and I'll start typing in an @ mention here. So I've typed in the @ symbol, and I could just follow that by the word team, and that would allow me to @ mention this team, or you can type the @ symbol followed by the name of the team and you could select that, and you can only @ mention the team that you're currently posting in, or you could @ mention a specific channel. So I could type the @ symbol, and then follow that with Brand Material to make an @ mention targeted at that Brand Material channel. Now, this is not used as often, but what this will do is send a notification alert to every member of that team to let them know that that team or that channel was mentioned. This is good if you're posting a message that you think people might miss, the notification will draw their attention to it. You may be in teams with several other members, using @ mentions lets you target messages to help draw the attention of specific people.
