Create a team and add members in Teams for Education
- [Instructor] If you are working in the Education version of Teams, then making a new team works a little differently from the Business or Enterprise versions. Just remember, you may not need to make a new team. Most people just join Teams that were made by other people. To start, make sure the Teams section is selected on the left. And if you are using the list layout, you'll see a plus button up here at the top. Or if you're using the grid layout, you can click the button on the right that says Join or Create team. And from that menu, choose Create team. Now, in an Education organization, there are a few types of Teams that you can have. However, most users will not see all of these options. Most users will only have the option to create this other type of team, and you'll probably see it labeled as a basic team. This type of team can be used by both teachers and students for communication related to things like study groups or clubs, sports, or student councils. And if that's what you need, you can set that up. If you need a new class, professional learning community, or staff team, then you will need to talk to your school's Microsoft 365 administrator and ask them to set up the team. I see these options because I am currently signed in as an administrator. A Class is where students and teachers can communicate and work on assignments. A Personal Learning Community is good for educators to collaborate, to share resources, or set up research groups. And Staff Teams are just normal Teams specifically for staff members in your school. I'm going to start with the basic team, which in this case is labeled as Other. I'll confirm that I want to use this template, and then you'll be able to set this team as either public or private. If the team is private, then only the people you invite will be able to join the team. Public means that any other people in your organization can join it without an invitation if they choose. You could select the privacy setting that you want, and then from there, you can continue setting up the team, and it will work as we saw in the previous video on creating a team for Business or Enterprise. But for now, I just want to cancel this, so I'll click the X up at the top. And we're back here where we can choose the type of team. But this time, I'll choose the class type, which only an administrator can do. So I'll click on that and confirm that I want to use this template. And for this type of team, you are not able to set or change the privacy setting. So a class team works a little differently, but let's continue and set up a new class, keeping in mind that only an administrator can do this. Of course, I need to give it a name. Since it's for a class, I'm going to name it after the class, which is Biology 1. It's a good idea to give it a description, but we'll just skip that to keep things moving, then I'll click Create. And now, it has created the team. Next, I could add people to the team from here, but for now, I'm going to skip that. So I'll click Skip, and once again, I'll click on the Teams button over here on the left, or I could click the back button up here to reset to my Teams category. And from here, I see all of my Teams, and I can see that the new team has been added to my list. So I've successfully created that team. And later, if you want to add more people to the team, you can click the button with three dots on that team to open this menu and you can choose Add member. And you can search for somebody in your organization. So, in the search field, I'll start typing in the name of somebody, and it searches through the directory in my organization. I can choose that person, and that person will be added to the team. But you should also look at this menu beside the person's name. If this person is a student, you should set them to be a member. If they are a teacher, you should set them as an owner, which gives them full control over the settings and member controls on the team. This person is a student, so I'll leave her set as a normal member, and let's add a few others. So I'll just search for a few other people in my organization or school, and they will be added to this list. Also, you have the option to add guests. Guests are people who are not in your established organization. Guests will have limited access. To invite a guest, you'll need to type in that person's full email address. Then, I can choose her here as a guest to add her to the list. This might be good for long-term substitute teachers or similar contractors who are not officially members of the organization, but do need to be a member of the team. The guest will receive an email with a link to set up a free Teams account that they can use to interact with the team. And you can always add more people later. But for now, I'll click Add, and every person I add to the team will automatically become a member. They do not have to accept an invitation or do anything to confirm membership. When they sign into Teams, they will see this team listed because they are a member, and they will be able to see all of the messages and everything else related to that team. And of course, you could add more members later. So now, I have made a new team and added members to it in the Education version of Teams.
