Chat with people outside of your organization
- Microsoft Teams is designed around communication between coworkers within the same organization, but it does support some collaboration between people in different organizations. In other videos, we saw how to invite external guests to a team, but you can also send chat messages to people outside of your organization. The system works so that any Teams user can contact any other Teams user by chat. All you need is the email address or phone number that that person has connected to their Teams account. I'm starting in the Chat section. The Chat button is selected on the left. I'll click the Compose button up at the top, and that takes me to the recipient field, where I would normally search for somebody in my organization. But if you have the email address or phone number for another Teams user, you can put that in. It does have to be an address or a number that is linked to an existing Microsoft account that is being used in Teams. So I put in an email address, and it says that it will search for this person externally. So I'll click on that. And since that email address does connect to a Teams account, I can see she is available to contact as an external recipient, so I can select her. Then I can go to the message field and type my message and send it. So it's really very easy to have a chat conversation with somebody outside of your organization.
