Assess urgency
- You face a wide array of decisions every day, some of them are very important, others are not as important. Before you make any decision I want you to take a moment to think about which type you're looking at. For more important issues you should rely on a thoughtful systematic approach to decision making. You need a good process to ensure you don't overlook important aspects of the decision to be made. In contrast, for simple decisions just using your intuition will often be sufficient. Generally speaking, the more important the decision the more you should use a systematic approach to problem solving. There is, however, one big exception, and that's when the situation becomes urgent. Urgency means that no matter how important the issue or how much time you thought you had, you need to act quickly, so you need to understand the difference between the perception of urgency and real urgency.
