Making a transition to a new job
- You may have noticed that I'm not a judge in a courtroom. That's what I thought I was going to be when I began college. And that's what I was working towards for many years as a paralegal. What changed for me? Law school? I hated it, it wasn't for me. There were many people who I attended law school with who also hated it, but stuck it out. And now they're in jobs they hate. Whether you're on the path to a career you're unsure of, spending thousands of dollars on an education for a career you don't want, or a smack dab in the middle of a career that no longer fits you, being mentally ready to make the change is half the battle. Many of the people like coach through a career change are really just looking for permission or confirmation that what they've decided is okay. They know they're unhappy and they're trying to find the right time to tell everyone else. Alternatively, if you're not sure you're ready yet, it's okay to decide you're not ready now. Instead create a plan, so you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Making the decision and then creating an escape plan gives you something to look forward to each day. It gives you something positive to fall back on during those times when you want to quit. And it gives you hope as you continue to work in a job you dislike. I've made many mistakes over the course of my career. I've also had many careers over the course of my life. So I know where you're coming from. A quote that applies here is the biggest mistake you can ever make in your life is being afraid to make one. Many times deciding whether or not you're ready to make a change is really about finally letting go of the fear. The fear of being wrong, the fear of making a bad decision, the fear of the judgment of others. The fear of being terrible in your new job. What if you changed careers and hate that too? What if you're not good at it? What if your friend, sibling, mother, boyfriend is right, and you really can't do it. Listen, something is pulling or pushing you towards a change. Ask yourself what is the catalyst causing you to act now? Law school was that something for me. What is it for you?
