- [Instructor] So what are some of the pros and cons of using decision trees, specifically the algorithms in this course, classification trees, regression trees, and the C4.5 algorithm? Well, let's start with the advantages. There are other benefits of trees in addition to the ones that we've already discussed. Trees are great for what's called data reduction. Since not all the variables are used you can start with a large number of variables and the tree algorithm will indicate which of those variables are likely to be the most useful. This is helpful even if you end up using another algorithm like neural networks. Next, they're great for data exploration. I always urge folks to start with decision trees for exactly this reason.
