- [Narrator] If you're running a website or a web service that's available to the public, it's important to provide security for users through https often called tls or ssl. Https uses cryptographic certificates to encrypt traffic and help guarantee that the data sent back and forth can't be viewed or changed by third parties. And while https is a commonly used technology, getting it set up has historically been kind of a pain. To make your web service secure, you need to buy a certificate for your domain and install certain associated files on your web server, and you need to change some of the server settings to use those files, and because certificates have an expiration date, you need to make sure you get updated certificates before the previous ones expire, and go through the whole process again to install the new certificates.
