Hard disks and SSD behavior
- [Instructor] We usually use the word hard disk or hard drive to indicate a storage device that has a spinning disk. Disks that spin mean that the data in the disk can only be read when the head is over that part of the disk. So, the spinning disk latency varies based on the position of the head. Hard disks tend to have a longer life, or wear longer than SSDs, so that's a consideration. But our disks tend to be less expensive per unit of storage as SSSDs. SSDs, solid state drive, is a device that looks like a disk, but it uses solid state memory devices, chips, instead of spinning disks. An SSD is a device that is plug compatible with a hard disk. You can plug it in with the same interface or cable as a hard disk, like a SATA interface. There's also PCI card devices that act like disks.
