Open source software
- [Grant] Linux is a great example of an open-source project. There's a few key differences between open source and closed source that you should be aware of. With closed-source software, only programmers who work for the copyright holder can improve and modify the source code. Most closed-source software cannot be distributed freely. With open-source software, a user can make changes and contribute them back to the project, or fork it into a new project. Open-source software can be distributed freely. Because Linux is open source, it has a rich community of contributors who add and improve it resulting in many different Linux distributions. Understanding open-source licensing is extremely important and if you want to know more, check out our other course called, Foundations of Programming: Open-Source Licensing.
