- The first example that comes to mind when I think of data impacting social justice issues is through the prison system and justice system in the United States, in terms of looking at how different bail programs have effects on communities, how plea bargains affect communities. That's a data set that really shows you the consequences of policies and legislature in a way that is really shocking in a lot of ways. And I think there's a lot of power in that, to see how systems really contribute to the oppression of people through laws and prison and the justice system. And the truth is, almost every data set can be used through a social justice lens, even environmental data sets can be used in that way, when you think about communities who are exposed to higher levels of toxins or contamination from industrial processes, that is something that is a social justice issue as well.
