- One of the ways to install Linux is inside a virtual machine. Virtual machines are little boxes that hold an operating system and run it within another operating system. This way of installing Linux is great if you're learning or testing, or either can't or don't want to modify your system's hard drive and boot setup. It's a good place to start because there's absolutely no risk of overriding or harming your current operating system or data. You can even take the virtual machine with you to different computers on an external hard drive. However, when running as a virtual machine your Linux installation won't have access to all of your computer's resources.
