Getting Ubuntu desktop
- [Instructor] If you don't already have an installation of Ubuntu, let's take a few minutes to get it installed. In order to get Ubuntu installed in an environment where we can learn about it, we need to use an installation disk. Linux installers come as disk images, large files that represent a CD or DVD, called an ISO file or an ISO image. We can download these files from a distributions website. In the case of a Ubuntu, that's ubuntu.com. I should note here that if you're using an older computer, one with a 32-bit processor, you won't be able to install this version of Ubuntu on your system. You'll need to look for an older version. But if your computer is from about 2008 or later, you can probably use the 64-bit version. Check your system specs to be certain. In my browser, I'll visit ubuntu.com, and I'll click through to download the current version of the desktop flavor. I'll find the Download link and click it. And then on the left, under Ubuntu Desktop, I'll click the button for 22.04 LTS, which is the current version of Ubuntu Desktop when I'm recording this. That takes a while to download. So be sure to set aside some time to allow that to finish. Once the file's downloaded, I can open up my Downloads folder and see that it's been stored there. Once we have the installer file downloaded, we can use it in a few different ways. We can use the disk image file along with a USB drive to create an installer to install Ubuntu directly on a PC. That's what we'll look at first. And we can also use the installer disk image file to install Ubuntu within a Virtual Machine, allowing us to run our Linux environment within our Windows or Mac OS system without having to reboot. You'll need to pick only one of these two methods. So I encourage you to watch both options and decide what works best for you. Installing directly on a PC is a good choice if you have spare hardware, and installing in a VM is a good choice if you don't have spare hardware. I'll be using the Virtual Machine option throughout the course. But if you choose to install directly on a PC, you can still follow along. I'll also be switching to use my native install to demonstrate a few settings that are relevant there. But again, you only need to pick one of these two installation options, or just sit back and watch.
