Creating data governance policies
- A data governance program becomes real and executable once a set of policies for data have been established. A policy is an agreed approach for guiding decisions. It's a statement of intent, and it's implemented as a procedure. As a simple example, a policy may state that in order to increase the security of data, all data stores must be fully backed up to an approved cloud provider every 30 days without exception. Policies are at the heart of data governance. Successful policies ensure roles and responsibilities are understood, data management is run efficiently and effectively, and data is appropriately protected. Data governance policies are often created by the data governance board, or DGB. Significant input will be provided by data stewards and data owners.
