Several years ago, Google led a study to discover the components of great teams in their organization. Researchers reviewed hundreds of variables and used 35 different statistical models. They found the number one dynamic of effective teams is psychological safety. Dr. Amy Edmondson, a Harvard Business School professor, defines psychological safety as, "A belief that one will not be punished or humiliated for speaking up with ideas, questions, concerns, or mistakes, and that the team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking." For leaders, this means cultivating a safe space without fear of retribution for people to connect and work together to accomplish great things.
