- [Instructor] California has long been a leader in passing progressive state laws. These laws often then serve as the model for legislation used in other states and at the federal level. This happened when California introduced the first vehicle emission standards in 1966, and it continues today in the areas of information privacy and security. Let's take a look at the ways that California law regulates these areas. In 2003, the California legislature passed the California Financial Information Privacy Act, which is also known as California Senate Bill one or SB-1. This law expands upon the financial privacy regulations put in place by the federal Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. Most notably, this act more tightly restricts the sharing of financial information with third parties. Under GLBA, financial institutions may share customer information with third parties, unless the customer opts out of the sharing.
