- Company valuation is integral to investment banking. Answering this question right or wrong can make or break your interview. So let's first review the three primary valuation methods. Number one, the multiples approach. This is the approach also referred to as comps on the street. This is when you multiply the earnings of the company by the P/E ratio of the industry in which it competes. That's a mouthful. Other ratios can be used as well. For example, when answering this question, you will want to define the valuation method, then add on an example. Number two, the transactions approach. This is the approach also referred to as precedence on the street. This is where you compare the company to other companies that have recently been sold or acquired in the same industry.
