Applying adult learning theory to instructional design can be both art and science. The art comes from using your creativity and intuition to apply adult learning concepts to training programs in new and effective ways. The science comes from carefully observing how well your ideas work and honing them through an ongoing process of trial and error. I'll give you an example from my own career. Years ago I read several studies that described how music can enhance learning. One of the studies mentioned that classical music from Baroque era composers such as Bach, Handel, or Vivaldi was particularly good for helping learners retain information when they were completing self-study activities. So armed with all this research I decided to give it a try. I went to my music collection and selected the first Baroque composition I could find, Toccata and Fugue in D minor by Johann Sebastian Bach.
