- [Narrator] File Maker custom apps are increasingly part of an ecosystem where all information is distributed in not necessarily in one place. Rest API's are a way for File Maker custom apps to communicate with third party data sources. I've got an example here of a File Maker custom app that's used for storing books and in order to be able to add books, it's using a book API and it's using the ability to scan ISBN codes. ISBN codes are a barcode that's on the back of each book that represents a unique identifier. I'm using File Maker's Native Barcode Scanning capability to populate this ISBN field. But then you'll see what happens after the data gets into the field. Instead of having to enter all the data in the iPhone, which can be cumbersome, we're using the scanning, and then communicating with the Google Books API to be able to pull down all data into the appropriate fields. All of that happens in real time…
