Seeking the right goal: Measuring genuine progress
- What do increased levels of crime, divorce, and natural disasters all have in common? The answer may surprise you. They all increase our GDP, or gross domestic product. Increased crime leads to more spending to replace stolen goods and home security systems. More divorce leads to the buying of more toys, clothes, and apartments for the same number of people. And increased natural disasters require expenditures on rebuilding. Few people would see any of these things as good things. Yet we often use the GDP as a measure of progress. The GDP is invaluable for measuring economic flows, but Robert F. Kennedy famously observed, "It measures neither our wit nor our courage; "neither our wisdom nor our learning; "neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country. "It measures everything, in short, "except that which makes life worthwhile." We should focus on the quality of growth, not just the quantity. The Better Life…
