Understanding overhangs and support
- [Instructor] Let's discuss overhanging geometry and support material. For most 3D printers you can build out at an angle of approximately 45 degrees. If the angle is any shallower, the print starts to look sloppy and the extruded layers may not adhere to one another, causing a failed print. So what if the geometry in your design exceeds 45 degrees or has large open spans? Then you need to use support material. You have two options. To use dissolvable supports you need a 3D printer with two extruders. One extruder uses the main polymer creating your part and a second extruder creates supporting geometry in a dissolvable polymer. The support material is later washed away in water or a chemical bath to leave a finished print. Industrial printers pair ABS, nylon, and more with proprietary dissolvable support material. Desktop printers have a couple common a pairings. PLA or nylon are often paired with PVA, which dissolves in water and another option is ABS paired with HIPS. HIPS can be…
