Print in place strategies
- [Instructor] Let's explore some print in place assemblies. Print in place and preassembled are two terms coined by the DIY 3D printing community to describe FDM 3D printed parts that contain integrated hinges, joints, and other types of captured features. There are a couple key print in place strategies. Pull parts down to the build plate. Angle up at a 45 degree angle. Leave clearance around moving parts and bridge over and through gaps. I want to show you a few examples of these strategies in action by exploring some print visualizations. A pin hinge is created by angling up to create a barrel and then bridging through it in short segments. A dimple hinge is created by printing nested cones or spheres with the right amount of clearance between the parts. A living hinge is made by planning a thin layer for flexibility.
