- [Instructor] Let's explore the different types of build plate surfaces. So broadly, we have two categories, hot and cold. Let's start with heated plates. Heated plates typically have a heating element covered with a metal plate, and then there's an additional covering which might include Kapton tape, glass, or specialty surfaces like PEI. Heated plates have some pros and cons. Overall, they're more versatile. For good adhesion, some thermoplastics require a heated build plate. Because you can regulate the temperature, you can use a wide variety of thermoplastics. The drawback is that a heated bed can cause slight expansion on the bottom edge of the 3D print, which isn't ideal if you require a high level of precision.
