- [Instructor] At its heart, this course is about design for manufacturing. Let's spend some time exploring how the intersection of design and manufacturing frames how we think about what is possible with this technology. Let's start by backing up to the origins of additive manufacturing. When it was invented in the 1980s, it was originally called rapid prototyping, and that name tells a story. This technology was introduced to solve a problem. As part of their design process, product designers create prototypes to test their designs along the way, and it's time-consuming. These early samples or working models help refine the design before it goes into production. Traditional prototyping techniques include sculpting with clay, carving wood, or machining metal, all effective, but they require many hands-on hours.
