- [Instructor] If your goal is to produce a design that is optimized for FDM 3D printers, especially those without dissolvable support materials, there are a handful of techniques to avoid or reduce support material. First, think about orientation. The original orientation may not be ideal for 3D printing. Consider whether the design would be better printed on its side or upside down instead. Add fillets or chamfers, unsupported, overhanging features require support material; but sometimes there's a simple fix. Adding a chamfered edge to the top of this flange doesn't impact the functionality of the design, but it saves time because it doesn't need support material. Use bridges. We've talked about how you can't print in mid-air, but there's an exception to that rule called a bridge. Most 3D printers can print a short span connecting two points.
