Achieving accuracy and fit

Achieving accuracy and fit

- [Instructor] What can you expect in terms of tolerance and accuracy from an FDM printer? And how much allowance or clearance should you provide for parts that fit together well? Tolerance is the permissible range of variation in the dimensions of an object. Commercial printers publish tolerance information. There are data sheets you can look up. But many other systems do not. To test a particular printer, you can print a part with known dimensions and then verify the dimensions of the print with a pair of calipers. How much variation should you expect from a 3D printer? Without data from manufacturers, it's hard to know for sure, but in my experience, +/-.1 millimeter is pretty typical, and up to .2 millimeter variation is common. Worst case, you might see a variation up to 1 millimeter. One factor that can affect the accuracy of a print is variation of the filament diameter. If your print shows evidence of over or under extrusion, you may want to measure your filament. Measure your…
