- [Host] Are there underrepresented groups beyond the female stories, but underrepresented groups of people of color, gender identities, and so forth, that listeners should be aware of? - [Guest] Sure, there are plenty of stories. It's going to take a certain amount of hard work to excavate them. The profession has been overwhelmingly white and male and European or American. And we can dispute that if we like, but I don't see any obvious way around that kind of demographic statistical fact. The big challenge that many of us in the field, and I'm talking about the design history field, is not simply to find, you know, some guy who has a Native American lineage or a Black American or a gay designer and bring that person to prominence, and start to tell those stories. That's, I think, critically important, and I want to give every encouragement to my students, my colleagues, and other people who are doing that kind of work.
