- [Interviewer] A few years ago you gave a really nice lecture about the history of women design and had a story about Charles and Ray Eames in particular. Could you kind of summarize or talk about that story a little bit? - [Interviewee] Oh yeah. I think that the story you might be referring to, Charles was given an award by one of the leading British design organizations. It was a Lifetime Achievement Award. And designers love to give each other awards. So, Charles receives the gold medal and then Ray Eames, and Ray of course was his wife, not his brother, was called up to the stage and presented with a red rose. And this kind of emblematic of, I don't think there's a more generous word than outright sexism that was wired into the profession throughout its early years. There are prominent women throughout the history of design and I've done a decent, if somewhat half-assed job of trying to excavate some of those stories.
