- Welcome to this derivatives fundamentals course. Derivatives are important instruments in capital markets and securities trading. They're commonly used in hedging, speculating, and other trading strategies. We're going to start this course by explaining what a a derivative contract is. We'll explain a forward contract and a futures contract, as well as the differences between forward and futures contracts. We'll then move on to understanding options and option contracts, and we'll finish this course by outlining the components of a swap contract.
