Incremental and differential backups
- [Instructor] In addition to making a full backup of everything the database contains, many RDBMS platforms have support for making partial or incremental backups. As a database grows in size from a few megabytes up to terabytes, gigabytes, and potentially, many petabytes of data, the costs associated with backing up all of that data, also increase. Not only do you need many multiples worth of available storage capacity, but the time required to make the backup copy can stretch out from seconds to hours, or even days. It's not uncommon to find that the length of time required for each backup to complete, exceeds the frequency at which you'd want to make them. Obviously, if you're trying to make a backup every hour and each backup takes a full day to complete, that's not a viable backup strategy.
