- And so this is the big news. What does it mean to be creative? We had to go through all of that so that this would land properly with you. What it means to be creative is that you are committed to failure and that's something you're not supposed to do the rest of the time you're at work. If you are on the shift to have the cafeteria filled with green beans, with onion rings, at 6:00 pm, nobody wants to hear that you tried something wacky and there is nothing to eat for dinner. Your job is to bring out the green beans, where are the green beans? But that's not creative work. Creative work is a commitment to failure on your way to better. And the reason it is so hard to be creative at work is work doesn't want to acknowledge this. They're saying, "Be creative and be right. Be creative and don't screw it up.
