- I think that the best criticism I've ever gotten in my whole career has always happened in these two-minute impromptu conversations, just like the guy on the sidewalk with my dog. And so what I want to encourage you to do is not to save it up for your next one-on-one meeting. Definitely don't save it up for your next performance review, but make sure that you're having these moments of management. It's fast, it doesn't cost any money, but it takes enormous emotional discipline. So how can you think about how to have these two-minute impromptu conversations? You want to go in being humble. I call it candor and not truth, 'cause to me, candor implies, "Here's how I understand the situation. I also am curious to know how you understand the situation." It's really a conversation. It's not a monologue. You also want to state your intention to be helpful.
