- Encoding involves clarity, simplicity, and a high level of empathy for your audience. Anytime we have to communicate something sensitive, it's crucial to put ourselves in the other person's shoes. It helps if we know our audience, and we have a personal connection. If we don't know the other person well, we have to send a tactful message and be courteous. In a more mature professional relationship, you will want to consider diplomacy, and ask yourself several questions. Is this a relationship I need to nurture? Is it necessary to build trust? Do I want to create a win-win situation between us, or does it even matter? When it comes to people you don't know well, I would suggest starting a conversation with some type of a soft opener, in an effort to build rapport, or possibly a warmup topic that relates to the context.
