The definition of the word has Greek origins referring to the word polis, meaning city, and the word politismos, which means civilization. So the original meaning of the word polite referred to people being cultivated and well-bred. How does it play out when we engage in a simple act of asking a stranger for the time? We could be as straightforward as, "Do you have the time?" More courteous by saying "Would you mind telling me the time please?" Or even more different by saying, "I'm sorry to bother you, do you happen to have the time please?" The benefits of being polite are invaluable.
