- Managers often shy away from coaching because they're not sure how to help, and they don't have the time. Add in the awkwardness of dealing with your people over video, and it's easy to put off coaching for months or even years. That's where the GROW model comes in, G-R-O-W. When you have a recipe or a formula, it gives you confidence. I like the GROW model because it's simple, it's structured, and it's catchy. You can remember it. And you don't have to be an expert in coaching or even in your employees area to use it. So let me walk you through each piece of it. G is for goal. Ask your employee what she wants to achieve. This can be something in a career, like become a vice president or something in a certain situation, like achieve the sales quota for this year.
