Accessing "zero focus"
- There were times on deck on the bridge in the Red Sea when things went perfectly still and quiet. Despite the crashing waves and bombardment of bad news that was coming at me from all sides. That was when the chatter in my brain disappeared. I call it Zero Focus. It's when the only thing in my awareness is the task that must be performed in that exact moment. I call it Zero Focus and not laser focus because I am so centered as if I've reached some sort of mental ground zero. Zero Focus is a level of concentration that we can all tap into, enabling us to perform at levels of excellence we never knew were possible. To Zero Focus, you need to be able to listen to what your gut is telling you and access the self-confidence to move forward. The intense experience on the Red Sea in 2004 at a time when the region was in a geopolitical tinder box was a career-defining, life-changing moment for me, and a prime example of what happens when leadership is tested by crisis.
